‘Big Trash Animals’ Bordalo II, Waste not, Want not…

Bordalo II, a talented urban artist originating from Lisbon, is making a significant impact on the world’s urban landscape with his profound message and exceptional Big Trash Animals. His unique approach involves utilising discarded materials as his medium, repurposing trash into visually striking and thought-provoking street art. By ingeniously transforming old car bumpers, worn rubber tyres, and discarded plastics, Bordalo II skillfully crafts intricate 3-D mural portraits of animals, showcasing his remarkable ability to breathe new life into neglected materials and turn them into captivating works of art.

The artist’s ‘Big Trash Animal’ series, which is an ongoing success, depicts animals all over the globe and utilises the very rubbish we are carelessly chucking away… Through his artwork, Bordalo II sheds light on the detrimental impact of our wasteful habits on the natural habitats of these innocent animals. In a society characterized by a disposable, single-use culture, Bordalo II’s art is a powerful reminder of the importance of mindfulness and resourcefulness in managing waste. He emphasises that the issue extends far beyond mere aesthetics, underscoring the significant environmental consequences of our consumption and waste production.

“It’s part of the concept of my work, and my work in general, to use found trash from the streets, the fruits of excessive consumerism/capitalism.”

Fancy some facts;

  • Over 80% of items buried in landfills could be recycled instead.
  • The main human contributor to environmental pollution is landfills.
  • Recycling half the world’s paper would free 20 million acres of forest land and its inhabitants.
  • One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually by plastic in our oceans.
  • 44 per cent of all seabird species, 22 per cent of cetaceans, all sea turtle species and a growing list of fish species have been documented with plastic in or around their bodies.

It is imperative that we take responsibility for our actions, and Bordalo II is actively promoting this message worldwide. By incorporating locally sourced trash into his artwork, Bordalo II ensures that the materials used and the overall design are intimately linked to the city from which they originate. In giving voice to the inhabitants of nature, Bordalo II’s art resonates loudly, advocating for greater environmental consciousness and responsibility.

We are proud to confirm that Bordalo II was among the eleven talented street artists at our GraffitiStreet Underground group show on 2nd July 2015.
