‘Sugar Rush’ New Street Art by Bisser for the Wild Brabant Festival 2016 in Tienen, Belgium
Just over a week after completing his ‘Kraken gaat door’Â mural in Leuven, Belgian artist Bisser returned to the streets with Sugar Rush, a new work created for the Wild Brabant Festival in Tienen.
The location provides the starting point for the mural. Tienen has long been associated with Belgium’s sugar industry, and Bisser transforms that history into one of his characteristically strange and playful scenes, populated by figures whose elongated bodies and surreal expressions sit somewhere between illustration, folklore and comic theatre.
At the centre of the composition are two of Bisser’s familiar characters, their heads transformed into drinking cups: one filled with tea, the other with coffee. Sugar cubes tumble into their drinks in quantities that suggest the title’s promised Sugar Rush, while smaller details scattered throughout the mural turn the apparently simple joke into a miniature narrative.
One sugar cube appears horrified as another is split apart, while elsewhere a cube reclines comfortably in a cup of coffee as though sunbathing. These small scenes are typical of Bisser’s work, where humour often emerges through close observation and seemingly incidental characters become part of a larger visual story.
The resulting mural is both site-specific and unmistakably Bisser, using Tienen’s relationship with sugar as the basis for an absurd but carefully constructed world.
