St+art India Foundation is happy to announce the St+art Mumbai 2017 Urban Art Festival has officially begun with the successful completion of the Mahatma Gandhi mural by kobra at Churchgate Station.
Having previously seen six St+art festivals in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, the St+art festival returns to Mumbai after the previous edition in 2014. St+art Mumbai 2017 will bring to the city 40 Indian and international artists and will host five art projects between October 18 and December 30, 2017 which will reflect on the nature and DNA of the city of Mumbai by working in some of its most significant, yet historically and contextually different locations – ChurchgateStation, Mahim (E), Sassoon Dock and Jindal Mansion.
From October 18 – October 28th, The Churchgate train station, one of Mumbai’s busiest stations, got an artistic makeover with a tribute mural titled “We Are All Equal” to the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi by Brazilian street artist, Eduardo Kobra.
“The mural portrays the pacifist leader traveling in third class, inspiring everyone to look at their fellow man with respect and equality. With 400 square meters, painted in anamorphic technique (3D painting), it is inserted in my project “Looks of Peace”. Kobra
This mural is a continuation of Kobra’s global project ‘Olhares da Paz’ (‘Looks of Peace’), he hopes the mural will convey a message of peace and harmony and encourage people to imbibe the values the Mahatma Gandhi stood for.
Churchgate is the first station of the Western Railway’s suburban line and is an extremely iconic one. Kobra painted Mahatma Gandhi getting down from a train, an adaption of a photograph taken in the early 1940s’ by Kulwant Roy owned by Aditya Arya Archive and India Photo Archive Foundation, and is symbolic of the impact that Gandhi and the railways have had on India’s Independence.
