Bordalo II’s Trash Seagull at FatBoy Slims Big Beach Cafe, Hove 2018

The Big Beach Cafe is not only a great place to hang out, but it now serves as a platform for Bordalo II to showcase one of his ‘Big Trash Animals’. These sculptures are made from waste materials and aim to raise awareness about our waste production and the negative impact of plastic pollution in our oceans. So, if you’re looking for a place to relax while also learning about the environment, the Big Beach Cafe is the perfect spot for you.

The ‘Big Trash Animal’ selected to be exhibited at the Big Beach Cafe is none other than the seagull. It’s possible that this choice was made because of the high number of seagulls that frequent Brighton’s beaches, or perhaps due to the fact that the Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club is nicknamed the seagulls, a popular hangout spot for DJ Norman Cook. Regardless of the reason, it’s fascinating to see how this often overlooked bird is being brought to the forefront in this unique way.

Bordalo II created the impressive seagull at the Big Beach Cafe in just two days. The sculpture was made entirely from discarded trash and plastic items collected by the city’s bin men and stored in DJ Norman Cook’s garage. It’s inspiring to see such creativity and resourcefulness in using recycled materials that would have otherwise been thrown away.

The local community is doing their part to support a clean ocean with the help of the Big Beach Cafe, which hosts the ‘Surfers against Sewage Beach Clean’. It’s great to see people coming together to protect the environment we all share.
