The city of Aalborg, in Denmark, has become an open air art gallery thanks to the long-running ‘Out in the Open’ mural project, curated by Kirk Gallery. Many street artists have painted large murals over the past four years, such as Wes21 & Onur, Guido Van Helten, Conor Harrington, Faith 47, Sepe & Tone, Bezt and David Walker . This year saw German duo Herakut paint their first mural in Denmark.
The German duo consist of partners Jasmine (Hera) and Falk (Akut), they began their collaboration in 2004, and have painted huge murals all over the world since. Hera is a classically trained artist and works with a combination of medias, whilst Akut is self-taught and works solely with spray. In the intersection between the two talents, these two artists have created a distinct expression that, today, is known worldwide.
For this years ‘Out in the Open’ mural project they have just completed a 50-meter long mural on the Godsbanen rail yards in downtown Aalborg entitled “Your Stories make me forget those Prison Bars“.
The mural is based on a child’s imagination as she befriends dragons, that take her away to another world.
The mural took three days to complete and the duo were inspired by the surroundings of the mural, the vertical bars on the wall and what is happening in the world in general.
“The wall is divided into long vertical fields. Instead of working against them or trying to hide them, we use them actively in the work. To feel stuck, squeezed in or behind bars leads to many different associations both at the real, mental and imaginary level.” Herakut
“Just the other day I read about children getting locked up at Australian camps when wanting to apply for asylum. When you get older working with art for many years you feel an urge to express something of greater meaning beyond yourself.” Herakut
