Banksy just posted an image of Devolved Parliament on his Instagram page, declaring that the huge canvas is now back on display in the Front Hall of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery ten years later.
“Devolved Parliament I made this ten years ago. Bristol museum have just put it back on display to mark Brexit day.. Laugh now, but one day no-one will be in charge.” Banksy
The canvas was first exhibited as ‘Question Time‘ in his ‘Banky versus Bristol Museum‘ exhibition in 2009. The show attracted over 300,000 people and was one of the top ten most visited exhibitions anywhere in the world that year.
The canvas has now reappeared ten years later to mark Bristol Museum’s 10th anniversary and Britain’s originally planned exit from the European Union on 29 March 2019. The artist has since reworked the painting and, more recently, retitled it ‘Devolved Parliament‘. The main difference between Devolved Parliament‘ and the original Question Time is that the lights in Parliament were painted out, while the upturned banana of a monkey in the foreground now faces downwards and other subtle adjustments.
“You paint 100 chimpanzees and they still call you a guerrilla artist.” Banksy 2009
Devolved Parliament shows the houses of parliament with chimpanzees and is the artist’s largest work on canvas at 4m wide and 2.5m in height. The huge artwork is now on show for six months thanks to its owner, who has kindly loaned it to the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.
Devolved Parliament will be displayed at the Bristol Museum from the 28th of March to the 1st of September 2019.
