Banksy’s Brexit Mural has been Erased and all that Remains is the White Flag and an Unexecuted Plan, Dover 2019

Guerrilla street artist, Banksy, known for his controversial, and often politically themed, stenciled pieces has just responded on his Instagram page to his Dover mural being whitewashed. The EU flag mural in Dover, England was originally painted in May 2017, and depicted a worker chipping away at one of the European flag’s 12 stars leaving cracks in the process. The mural stood pride of place on the side of the town’s Castle Amusements building until recently.

Local residents and the world were left concerned during August when scaffolding was erected covering the mural. Now the scaffolding has been removed and a coat of white paint covers the EU flag mural. In an Instagram post, Bansky explains how he would have painted over it himself, writing:

“Oh.
I had planned that on the day of Brexit I was going to change the piece in Dover to this..
But seems they’ve painted over it.
Nevermind. I guess a big white flag says it just as well.” Banksy

The computer-generated image, posted on Instagram today alongside a screenshot of KentOnline‘s story about the missing mural, shows the EU flag lying crumpled in a heap on the floor with ‘Life is Beautiful’ written at the side. The KentOnline picture shows the image of a white ‘flag’ is all that remains!

Dover District Council says it was not involved in the disappearance and owner of the property has not commented.
