PichiAvo Pay Tribute to King Robbo in Shoreditch, London
GraffitiStreet caught up with Spanish artist duo Pichiavo as they travelled from Valencia to London to create a new mural in Shoreditch, bringing together the two visual languages that have come to define their practice: classical figurative painting and contemporary graffiti.
Painted on Sclater Street, the work was created as a tribute to King Robbo, the influential London graffiti writer who sadly lost his life on 31 July 2014. Robbo became one of the best-known figures in the history of British graffiti, not only for his long-standing presence within the scene but also for the highly publicised sequence of interventions involving Banksy that later became part of London street-art history.
For PichiAvo, the mural provided an opportunity to merge technical painting with the raw energy of graffiti writing, layering classical imagery with lettering, colour and the visual intensity of the street.
Even at this stage in their career, the combination was unmistakable: a collision of antiquity and contemporary urban culture that would become central to their international practice.
