Joachim’s artwork “Joan of Arc” is a stunning masterpiece that speaks volumes about the immense power of inspiration and the profound influence one remarkable individual can have on history.
As a child, Joachim was deeply moved and inspired by the story of Joan of Arc (French- ‘Jeanne D’Arc), the national heroine of France who played a pivotal role in the Hundred Years War between England and France.
At the age of nineteen, she was sentenced by a partisan church court and died at the stake. Twenty-five years after her death, Pope Calixtus III had the trial reviewed. She was found innocent and was given the title of a martyr at the verdict of her trial (July 7, 1456).
Joachim’s painting based on Joan of Arc is particularly moving. The artist’s choice of depicting Joan of Arc in her most vulnerable form, completely naked, adds a unique and compelling layer to the piece. This bold decision underscores the idea that Joan of Arc was stripped of everything, including her clothes and dignity, when she was sentenced and killed. Also, the naked aspect of the painting shows her reborn, symbolising her innocence when the trial is reviewed after her death. The artwork portrays the legendary heroine riding a magnificent horse with her hair flowing wildly, evoking a sense of liberation and freedom.
Joachim’s painting is a homage to a truly remarkable woman who changed the world forever, and it’s a poignant reminder of the immense impact that a single person can have on the world.
