For the first time in 38 years, the biggest carnival in Northern Europe has been cancelled.
Last year, Aalborg Carnival beat their record with 85.000 participants but this year’s Carnival on 23rd of May 2020 has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The International Parade on the 15th May and the Children’s Carnival on the 16th May has also been cancelled.
With this news Case Maclaim painted a large mural in Aalborg, Denmark as part of the ‘Out in the Open’ mural curated by Kirk gallery.
The mural portrays a young woman in her clown’s costume, and a partly completed clowns mask. She believed she was going to the carnival, but her preparations stopped due to the cancellation.
“A carnival is something special because it is an event where all are equal. It is the only time of the year where everybody gets to be the same – rich or poor, CEO or student, man or women since everybody is dressed out to be something different.” Case Maclaim
The carnival in Aalborg has become a metaphor for the artist of the current situation in the world. Let’s hope Case Maclaim comes back next year to paint a smile on her face :).
‘Out in the Open 2020’ will see more murals be added over the summer. Stay tuned…
