The Art of Sisterhood! Positive Vibes in Difficult Times, New York 2020

Sisters are definitely doing it for themselves! New York-based muralist Danielle Mastrion has just finished painting a collaborative mural designed by young immigrant women from The Brave House to bring some positive vibes in these difficult times.

The four-months of organisation was curated by Solare Creative founder Angela Del Sol, a Colombian-American social entrepreneur and artivist. Angela partnered with The Brave House to represent the Immigrant voice during a crisis and uplift the morale of the city with beauty, colour, and true collaboration.

“When I started putting this project together, I envisioned a creation that represents the resiliency of the people of our city, especially those whose lives were complicated enough before COVID-19 — BIPOC communities. This “Creative Resilience” Mural Project is an initiative to open up a dialogue about social justice, food sovereignty, and young women’s perspectives. This is an opportunity to allow talent from marginalized groups to be seen and heard.” Angela Del Sol

The Brave House supports young immigrant women, ages 16-24, in New York City, with a focus on those who are survivors of gender-based violence. Who welcomes youth who identify as female as well as those who are gender-non-conforming, transgender, or non-binary. The Brave House provides free legal support, community space, and holistic services, including art classes, meditation workshops, English lessons, self-defence class, dance, career advising, college visits, mentorship and much more.

“In a dark season of life, this mural project was a ray of light. Co-creating this piece of art with a group of young women, all while quarantining, was really healing and was an outlet during such a hard time for all of us. Those zoom meetings were a space where we could express ourselves & be heard and seen by our sisters in action. Through the process, we dreamt up together what message we wanted to share with our community in this historic time. What I appreciated about the creative process was that our members’ history, culture, and ideas were celebrated, respected, and validated,” Lauren Blodget, founder of The Brave House.

The “Creative Resilience” mural can be found at Evolve Health, Lower East-side NYC and was painted in ten days by New York artist Danielle Mastrion and the women from The Brave House.
