OPTICHROMIE for Jersey City: A Mesmerising 25-Story Mural by Felipe Pantone

Argentinian-Spanish artist Felipe Pantone has just unveiled his latest masterpiece, “OPTICHROMIE,” for Jersey City. The 25-story mural, spanning over 1400 square meters, is his most extensive work to date. It features a mesmerising blend of geometric patterns in monochrome, gradients, and bold colours set against the iconic backdrop of the New York skyline.

The making of this monumental artwork was no easy feat, as Felipe Pantone and his team faced several challenges along the way. One of the most notable obstacles was the two earthquakes that shook the lift while working on the mural. Despite this, the team persevered and completed the project to stunning effect.

The mural’s sheer size posed another challenge, requiring meticulous planning and team coordination. Felipe Pantone and his collaborators had to map out intricate designs on the building facade, using two swing stages that were each nine meters long. They also used over 170 gallons of paint applied with rollers and an airless sprayer for the gradients.

Despite the physical and mental demands of working on such a large-scale project for 25 days straight, Felipe Pantone and his team were up to the task. The transformative impact of “OPTICHROMIE for Jersey City” on the urban landscape is undeniable, reshaping architectural perceptions and inspiring audiences worldwide.

Felipe Pantone shared that designing and executing such a massive mural was an ultra-physical and mental effort for him and his team. He proudly acknowledged their commitment and endurance, especially in the face of the earthquakes that shook them up. He also expressed his satisfaction in completing the project despite its daunting size and challenges.

“It’s been a titanic mission during a 25-day spring stay where my team and I endured rain, cold, two earthquakes (on the lift), and a solar eclipse!”

The mural is located on the corner of Summit and Magnolia Ave in Jersey City, on the facade of a new residential building. Pantone designed it over a year ago, and it was conceived for the building before its construction.
