The Ugly Duckling: Ernest Zacharevic’s Transformative Mural in Aalborg

Ernest Zacharevic’s latest mural, “The Ugly Duckling,” in Aalborg, Denmark, is inspired by the renowned Danish author H.C. Andersen. It features a large origami swan intricately folded from an old Danish banknote dated 1952, bearing Andersen’s portrait, and a young girl nestled within the swan wings.

Zacharevic’s thoughtful approach to integrating cultural and historical elements into his art is evident in this mural. The fusion of the iconic swan, a symbol of transformation, and the depiction of a young girl within its embrace evoke a sense of fun. The mural also invites viewers to reflect on themes of childhood, imagination, and the legacy of Andersen’s literary works.

“I have always been fascinated by the adventures of H. C. Andersen. When Denmark brought ‘The little Mermaid’ to the World Expo in China, I remember feeling completely intrigued by how a public piece of art becomes that significant a symbol for a country. Hence, getting the opportunity to go to Denmark, made me think a lot about this.”

“The Ugly Duckling” by Hans Christian Andersen follows the story of a duckling that faces mistreatment due to its appearance but ultimately discovers its true identity as a beautiful swan. The story is a powerful allegory for resilience and self-acceptance.

The artist’s recognisable style, defined by whimsical depictions of children engaging with their surroundings, persists as the girl perches on the swan’s back, akin to a baby duckling nestled against its mother.
