Serbian street artist Artez’s “He Who Holds the Light” mural in Sicily pays tribute to Mario Francese’s courageous battle against the mafia through his journalism. The exceptional mural was selected and organised by iArt Fivas for their 2024 festival.
iArt Fivas, situated in Sicily, explores the intersection of cinema and Sicilian culture through street art and digital art. The initiative presented 32 murals across eight municipalities, depicting directors and scenes from influential films shot in Sicily. These murals aim to contribute to the establishment of an innovative cinema distribution museum in Sicily.
Crime of the Mafia – Mario Francese
Inspired by the film “Crime of the Mafia – Mario Francese,” the “He Who Holds the Light” mural portrays a monumental human figure from behind, symbolizing the burdens and vulnerability faced by those combating the mafia.
Mario Francese (6 February 1925 – 26 January 1979) was a fearless Italian crime reporter who exposed the workings of the Sicilian Mafia. Despite the risks, he relentlessly pursued truth and justice, ultimately meeting a tragic end in his assassination. His son, Giuseppe Francese, also sought justice fervently but tragically took his own life before his father’s killers could be brought to justice. Mario Francese’s legacy as a valiant journalist who sacrificed everything for truth and justice continues to inspire, particularly for street artist Artez during his time in Sicily.

He Who Holds the Light
Artez’s depiction of the human figure’s back in the mural is a poignant symbol of the risks and sacrifices Mario Francese undertook in his pursuit of truth. The artist skillfully integrates a short staircase, symbolising a progression toward the light, conveying a message of hope, the possible victory of light and truth, and the pain and hopes of the world.

“In an effort to underscore the gravity of Mario Francese’s brave fight against the mafia through his journalism, l’ve chosen to depict the back of a human figure. The back, the support structure of any living being, with its muscles, joints, and bones tense, serves as a symbol of the risky position he occupied. Its nakedness underscores his vulnerability in the face of such danger. Yet, amidst his own fears and struggles, he perseveres, illuminating the path with his actions and offering hope to those too afraid to challenge the status quo”

Artez
Andrej Zikic, also known as Artez, was born in Belgrade in 1988. He came of age in a cultural and artistic void and witnessed the rise of graffiti culture as a form of self-expression for the youth in his city. Over the years, Artez has evolved his creative work, experimenting with various styles and mediums and focusing on large-scale murals with acrylics and brushes. His style can be described as a fusion of realism and illustration.
