Futura

Futura, formerly known as Futura 2000, is an American contemporary artist from New York recognised as a pioneer of abstract graffiti. Emerging from the city’s subway-writing culture in the 1970s, he broke from traditional lettering to create atmospheric compositions built from fine aerosol lines, orbital forms, atoms and gestural marks. His multidisciplinary practice spans painting, murals, sculpture, graphic design and fashion collaborations, while retaining the energy of his street origins. Futura also became closely associated with The Clash, painting live during their Combat Rock tour. His innovative approach helped expand graffiti beyond typography and established abstraction as a major language within urban art.
