Banksy invited Oscar-winning film director Danny Boyle to “the least Christmassy place on earth” to direct an alternative nativity play, “Alternativity, at the Banksy’s Walled Off Hotel carpark in Bethlehem, situated in the shadow of the separation barrier.
The “Alternativity” play was performed by local children on the 3rd December in the car park of the Walled Off Hotel, just around the corner from Manger Square, which is believed by some to be the birthplace of Christ.
The play was filmed for a BBC 2 documentary. Part 1 which is aired on BBC2 TODAY Sunday, 17 December at 9pm follows Danny Boyle over the course of six weeks as he tries to bring the play together. With the help of hotel Manager Wisam Salsaa, they team up with Riham Issac the local director, and find the cast, snow and a well behaved white donkey.
Part 2 shows the 30 min Performance which is aired on BBC2 Wednesday 20th December at 11pm.
During his latest visit to film the documentary, Banksy created two new murals. Peace On Earth which was stencilled in front of the Chapel of the Milk Grotto, which has the asterisked caveat: “Terms and conditions apply”. The second work shows two angels trying to crowbar open the West Bank wall.
