Banksy’s Christmas Message highlights Homelessness, Birmingham 2019

Banksy shared a video today of his latest mural on Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery quarter, highlighting homelessness, especially around the festive Christmas time.

With contrast to the gold and diamonds found in Birmingham’s Jewellery quarter, Banksy’s video shows a homeless man with a white beard going to sleep on a public bench, with two reindeer stencilled on the brick wall, to look like Santa on his sleigh.

Banksy also commented on the generosity of the people of Birmingham, who offered ‘Ryan’ food and drink in the 20 minutes it took to create the video.

“God bless Birmingham. In the 20 minutes we filmed Ryan on this bench passers-by gave him a hot drink, two chocolate bars and a lighter – without him ever asking for anything.” Banksy

The mural has now been fenced off, and it looks like Rudolf is in town as the Reindeers now have red noses.

The music ‘I’ll be home for Christmas” by joy Williams is playing in the background as the homeless man sleeps.

“I’ll be home for Christmas… If only in my dreams…”
