This mural, inspired by the rich musical heritage of Manchester, reflects the artist’s first significant visit to the city—a place that has long influenced their life through its powerful music scene. The works of Joy Division, particularly those of Ian Curtis, have served as a lifelong companion for the artist, providing solace and inspiration amid life’s challenges.
“As with all my eye pieces I wanted to embed the reflection in the place and my relationship with it. This was my first proper visit to the city, yet Manchester has had a huge influence on my life through its music. Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division, have been with me as long as I can remember and if you’ve seen the film Control you’ll know the struggles with mental health that sadly ended up taking his life. As a thank you for his music and a timely reminder that 19 men a day die by suicide the uk, I hid the iconic image of him within the reflection and wrapped the piece in fragile tape”. MDS
The mural serves not only as an homage to Ian Curtis but also as a timely reminder of the pressing mental health crisis facing the UK. With a staggering 19 men dying by suicide each day, the artist incorporated an image of Curtis hidden within the mural’s reflection, using fragile tape to encase the piece. This artistic choice symbolises the fragility of all of us and encourages essential conversations surrounding mental health.
