Following the path of the Baltic Way: Saype’s “Beyond Walls” Project in Vilnius, Lithuania

French-Swiss artist Saype has once again created his world-long human chain with his latest instalment of the “Beyond Walls” project, this time in the historical city of Vilnius, Lithuania, following the path of the Baltic Way for the 21st stage of Beyond Walls.

The project, which aims to promote global solidarity and togetherness, has become a powerful symbol of human connectivity. The Vilnius segment of “Beyond Walls” is particularly unique as it marks the first time Saype had to wear a harness due to the slope of the location. The artist’s determination to overcome this unique challenge demonstrates his commitment to bringing his extraordinary vision to life.

Despite the added complexity, Saype’s dedication to continuing his human chain remained strong. The monumental land art painting spans an impressive 1400 square metres and was crafted using biodegradable pigments made from charcoal and chalk, staying true to Saype’s environmentally conscious approach.

Positioned at the foot of the iconic Gediminas Tower, the artwork serves as a poignant reminder of history and unity. This site holds tremendous significance as it was once the starting point of the Baltic Way, where 2 million people joined hands in a remarkable display of solidarity on August 23, 1989, forming the largest human chain in history. The imagery created by Saype in Vilnius depicts an intertwining chain of hands, symbolising unity, mutual aid, and collective effort beyond boundaries.

This artwork reminds us that human solidarity is not a notion fixed in the past, but a living bond that transcends time and continues to shape our present.

In an increasingly divisive world, the artist’s choice to portray the largest human chain carries a powerful message of embracing empathy and togetherness. It serves as a clarion call for global solidarity and understanding, transcending geographical and cultural barriers.

Saype’s innovative approach to art, which involves creating massive frescoes on natural canvases, such as grass, sand, and snow, means the transient nature of his works, designed to fade over time, seeks to impact mindsets while respecting the environment in line with his eco-responsible ethos.

The “Beyond Walls” project commenced in 2019 at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris and has since journeyed to numerous global locations, including New York, Venice, Cape Town, and more. Saype’s ambition for this undertaking is nothing short of remarkable, aiming to traverse the five continents and connect people from diverse corners of the world.
