Description
The Invaded Cube print, featuring an enlarged frontal view of a Rubik’s Cube, boasts Invader’s iconic 8-bit video game character on the central white square. Six plastic blocks of blue, green, orange, yellow, and red create a vividly balanced chromatic pattern.
This piece is a true manifesto of Invader’s Rubikcubism, as it is based on a picture he created in 2005 to illustrate the new movement he had created. In 2022, he added his signature space invader to the central white block.
The print, produced in collaboration with HENI Editions, retains the original’s three-dimensional quality, with the cube’s variously coloured sides visible against the white background. Invaded Cube is a 100 x 100 cm Diasec-mounted Giclée print on an aluminium composite panel that showcases the original object’s smooth texture in high definition.
The enlarged size of the cube allows viewers to examine its intriguing internal relations of colour and form. Invader’s Rubikcubist practice is evoked with particular precision in this iconic image. His three-dimensional sculptures, integrated within the playfulness of his materials, rely entirely on the cube’s potential for mechanical movement. On the other hand, this print focuses on the glossy plastic material, reproduced through a different technology that highlights its mosaic-like quality.
The cube’s bright colours and formal simplicity elicit a complex response that combines nostalgia for the 1980s and excitement for the billions of possible colour combinations. Despite its specific pattern, Invaded Cube is a puzzle that will never be solved: its colourful balance exemplifies Invader’s unique practice.
