Long Dark Tunnel: An Immersive Journey with 10FOOT, TOX, and FUME, London

Attending the first opening private view of the ‘Long Dark Tunnel‘ exhibition was an unforgettable experience that exceeded the hype, daring guests to dive into the world of three legendary kings —10FOOT, TOX, and FUME.

The newly revealed secret venue, located just steps from the third exit of Piccadilly Circus station, spans two floors of Arts Arkade. The enormous billboard outside the venue, boldly displaying the ‘Long Dark Tunnel’ poster and defiantly untouched white centre, was our first hint that we were entering a world where tags and truths collide.

The vibe was already buzzing and as the final preparations were completed, onlookers were lucky enough to witness an unforgettable scene: 10FOOT scaling the ladder with a black spray can in hand, tagging the billboard poster, closely followed by TOX and then FUME, all faces covered. No photos ‘in action’ were allowed—just raw, unfiltered tagging happening in real time.

The title of the exhibition pays homage to the tunnels of London’s underground system, drawing inspiration from the jungle track “Valley of the Shadows” by Origin Unknown.

10FOOT 10FOOT

The enigmatic graffiti artist known as 10FOOT has garnered acclaim as one of Britain’s most prolific graffiti writers. His rebellious spirit and unparalleled dedication to graffiti have led him to leave his tag across the world, with London holding a special place in his heart. From navigating the hidden passageways of the London Underground to scaling towering bridges, 10 Foot’s daring escapades stand as a testament to his relentless pursuit of expression.

Graffiti embodies a defiance of authority and a daring expression of creativity, often at great personal risk. Despite the inherent dangers and legal consequences associated, 10Foot remains undeterred, navigating the complexities and contradictions surrounding graffiti culture. He has encountered harsh imprisonment for his graffiti, despite receiving offers from music labels, fashion brands, and TV producers, although he opts to remain independent and devoted to the Diabolical Dubstars or DDS.

As 10 Foot continues to push the boundaries of graffiti, his mysterious persona and prolific output have cemented his status as a legendary figure in the world of graffiti.

10FOOT’s studio pieces for ‘Long Dark Tunnel’, inspired by the very motorway signage he tags, cleverly reflect the narratives of the roads he navigates daily. Through his work, 10FOOT prompts us to consider the stories behind these signs and the significance of the routes and destinations they represent. 10FOOT’s artworks evoke thoughts about graffiti culture and the often-overlooked spaces that shape our journeys.

TOX TOX TOX TOX

TOX is a prolific British graffiti artist known for the extensive proliferation of his signature tag – consistently featuring the word ‘TOX’ followed by the year. His tags can be found throughout the London Underground network for over two decades, making his presence in the city both provocative and iconic.

Often referred to as the UK’s ‘most imprisoned graffiti writer’, TOX has faced arrest over 40 times and has served nine separate prison sentences, highlighting his dedication to graffiti. What sets TOX apart is not only his frequent encounters with law enforcement but also the relentless passion that drives him to continue tagging despite the risks involved. His nonconformity has earned him a substantial following, including renowned street artist Banksy, who expressed his support during TOX’s conviction for criminal damage in June 2011. During the trial, Prosecutor Hugo Lodge mocked TOX’s style, but Banksy acknowledged TOX’s impact by referencing him in a street piece that same year.

FUME FUME FUME

FUME is known for his significant contributions to London’s graffiti scene form since 1992, particularly for his consistent train vandalism and track tagging. As a key member of the infamous DDS crew, he has played a crucial role in shaping London’s graffiti culture and has been involved in many of the city’s most audacious graffiti missions. His tags and throw-ups prominently featured on train tracks and abandoned buildings in London, especially during an era when surveillance was minimal across the city.

Born and raised in West London, FUME maintains an air of mystery by avoiding social media and public appearances, allowing his graffiti to speak for itself.

FUME’s studio works weave together underground graffiti realms, with layers that reveal themselves only to the curious. Each piece serves as a portal to the graffiti underground world, drawing you deeper into its hypnotic allure.

What really stands out is the synergy between the artists; each piece complements the others, creating a cohesive experience that flows seamlessly throughout the space.

Robbo Tribute

Included in the exhibition is a touching and respectful tribute to legendary graffiti writer Robbo, secured behind a metal fence and offering a glimpse into the personal life of a man who greatly influenced the scene.

King Robbo, born John Robertson, was a key figure in the British underground graffiti scene until his passing on July 31, 2014. He began his artistic journey 1985 by painting trains and co-founding the graffiti collective WRH (We Rock Hard). Robbo is best known for his infamous rivalry with Banksy, highlighted in the documentary ‘Graffiti Wars’. Their conflict escalated when Banksy altered Robbo’s piece ‘Robbo Incorporated‘. After suffering a severe head injury in 2011, Robbo sadly passed away in 2014, leaving Robbo’s legacy that continues to inspire with his impactful contributions to the scene.

The Big Issue Signed Vest

With an incredible roster of graffiti writers and street artists in attendance, Big Issue vendor and punk rock music lover Kelvin embraced the moment by gathering signatures on a Big Issue vest from as many artists as he could. This one-of-a-kind piece, set to be auctioned for charity, reflects Kelvin’s deep commitment to giving back to the community. For Kelvin, the joy he felt at the event was equally matched by the opportunity to support others.

Well done Kelvin. You’re the rock star. Image copyright GraffitiStreet
