In the heart of Shillong, a celebration of culture and craftsmanship unfolds at the Directorate of Sericulture and Weaving. The mural “Threads of Tradition,” created by the talented artist Khatra, captures the essence of weaving as more than just a craft—it’s an embodiment of history, identity, and community.
As a weaver bends over her loom, her hands move with precision, threading colours and patterns that tell stories passed down through generations. The intricate Jainthohbah and Khneng embroidery, along with Garo patterns, transcend mere aesthetics. They represent the struggles, resilience, and creativity of those who create them. Each motif is a testament to the skilled hands and dedicated hearts behind them, weaving narratives of culture into every piece.
This project serves as a powerful reminder that culture is not static; it is a vibrant, living entity that we continuously shape. Every weave and stitch reflects a collective memory, a channel for personal and communal expression. The mural beautifully encapsulates this continuity, suggesting that the act of creating—whether through textiles or any other medium—allows us to engage actively with our heritage.
Supported by the Department of Textiles, Meghalaya, and made possible through a collaborative effort with artists and producers, this initiative by Asian Paints and St+art India Foundation fosters appreciation for traditional crafts.
The mural reminds us to honour the past while actively participating in crafting our cultural narrative.
The mural encourages reflection on the importance of tradition and art in our lives, recognising that each thread wove together strengthens the fabric of our community, celebrating diversity and shared histories. The artists reminds us to continue to nurture and innovate, ensuring that these rich practices endure and thrive for generations to come.
