Spidertag’s Interactive Neon Mural #26 Lights Up Linz, Austria

Spidertag has completed Interactive Neon Mural #26 in Linz, Austria, a monumental 26 x 12 metre installation created for Calle Libre that transforms the architecture of Post City into an illuminated, responsive public artwork. Activated every evening from 7pm until 11pm, the mural continues the Spanish artist’s long-running exploration of light, geometry and participation, extending the idea of muralism beyond the painted surface and into something the public can actively experience.

Spidertag’s Interactive Neon Mural #26 is installed on the clock tower of Post City Linz, the former Austrian Post logistics centre beside Linz Central Station.

Developed by Spidertag almost a decade ago after years of experimentation, his Interactive Neon Mural project combines the immediacy of street art with light-based installation and digital interaction, allowing visitors to connect with the work through their smartphones and influence elements of the illuminated composition. Rather than presenting the mural as a fixed image, Spidertag introduces movement and participation into the encounter, creating an artwork that can shift according to the people standing before it.

For the Linz commission, Spidertag has responded directly to the architecture of Post City, incorporating the building’s clock tower into a composition that considers ideas of time, memory and the future. The location forms part of Calle Libre’s Addressing Tomorrow project, which has transformed the former postal distribution complex beside Linz Central Station into a large-scale public art site ahead of its redevelopment.

The setting feels particularly suited to Spidertag’s practice, since a building once designed around communication and movement is now activated through another kind of network, where light, technology and public interaction move across its surface. His familiar geometric language remains instantly recognisable, but here it becomes architectural, extending across the façade as a system of illuminated lines that shifts character completely after dark.

What makes Spidertag’s Interactive Neon Murals particularly compelling is the way they challenge the traditional relationship between artist, artwork and audience without abandoning the accessibility of street art. The work remains public and immediate, yet the viewer is no longer simply looking at the mural from the outside; through the interactive element, they become part of its changing visual state.

With Interactive Neon Mural #26, Spidertag continues to push his distinctive neon language into new territory, creating a work that sits between street art, public art, light installation and digital participation while remaining firmly rooted in the city.
