Banksy is an anonymous British street artist, political activist and filmmaker whose satirical stencil works have transformed the international perception of graffiti and contemporary art. Emerging from Bristol’s underground scene in the 1990s, he became known for images of rats, children, police officers and soldiers that address war, capitalism, surveillance, inequality and state power. His interventions range from street works and prints to ambitious projects including Dismaland, The Walled Off Hotel and the 2018 Sotheby’s shredding of Girl with Balloon, later renamed Love is in the Bin. Through humour, provocation and anonymity, Banksy has reshaped how graffiti is understood, exhibited and collected within contemporary art.
