Bisser Paints ‘Big Fish in a Small Pond’ in Ghent, Belgium
Belgian artist Bisser has completed a new mural in Ghent titled Big Fish in a Small Pond, bringing his strange, character-driven world to the neighbourhood of Visserij.
The location gives the work its starting point. Visserij translates as “Fishery”, and Bisser plays directly with that identity, turning the familiar expression “big fish in a small pond” into a surreal reversal of roles.
Rather than fishermen catching the fish, Bisser’s oversized creature takes control of the scene, capturing the fishermen instead and quite literally becoming the dominant figure in its small pond.
It is a simple visual joke, but one that works particularly well within Bisser’s wider practice, where animals, humans and imaginary creatures frequently exchange roles and the logic of everyday life is gently overturned.
The mural is unmistakably his: playful, slightly absurd and built around an idea that rewards a second look.
