Shamsia Hassani
The lowdown on Shamsia Hassani
Kabul , Afghanistan
Shamsia Hassani is an Afghan contemporary artist based in Los Angeles, widely recognised as Afghanistan’s first female graffiti artist. Emerging from Kabul’s art scene, she developed a distinctive visual language centred on monumental female figures who embody resilience, dignity and quiet defiance. Her paintings and murals explore freedom, displacement, identity and the restricted visibility of women in public life. Recurring motifs, including musical instruments and figures with closed eyes or obscured mouths, transform silence into a powerful form of expression. Working across street art, painting and digital practice, Hassani uses art to challenge narratives of invisibility and imagine a more hopeful future for Afghan women.
